For me making Black History has nothing to do with what’s on my resume or the jobs I’ve held or the boards and committees I’ve sat on. Rather, I make Black History everyday by choosing to honor the heritage of those who have paved the paths for me while upholding the values they’ve instilled in me.

I wake up each day and put on my father’s optimism and calm temperament. I also take with me my mother’s compassion and strong work ethic. I trust in the God that they told me would always work things together for my good and practice the humility that they said was necessary to remain grounded.

I strive to carry a goodness and decency that was passed down from my grandparents and great-grandparents- it’s based on a simple precept that you do unto others as you would have done to you. I walk with a confidence and security that comes from a family full of supportive siblings, aunties, uncles and cousins. They are my personal cheerleaders, my constant affirmers, my dream encouragers.

Professionally, as a current employee in the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s communication office, I respect the legacy of SWAC sports information greats Collie Nicholson, Sam Jefferson, and Chuck Prophet. As an alumnus of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, I aim to apply the skills and abilities that I honed from Mr. Joseph McIver (former Morgan State SID) and by observing other greats such as Bill Hamilton (South Carolina State SID) and Edward Hill (Howard University SID).

These and many more are the shoulders that I stand on every day. They are my Black History. When I choose to live by the principles and morals that they’ve imparted in me, I make Black History. When I decide not to take the sacrifices they’ve made on my behalf for granted, I make Black History. When I take the dreams, hopes and wishes they have for me and soar beyond them, I make Black History. And finally, when I pass all of these things along and ensure it carries through to another generation, I become Black History.
